Penny and I went to see MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING this weekend. It was a great weekend! This is Shakespeare the way it is supposed to be. Jess Whedon and his ensemble of actors brought a sense of joy to the work that translated to what we saw on the screen. To often actors and directors get caught up in doing “Shakespeare” when they should be doing they play, and forget who wrote it. Yes, understanding the style and language is important but it should always be approached like any other play. Do the play! —- And do these actors do the play! This is a must see for every actor. But just as important are the lessons to be learned for the passion for the craft that Whedon and his friends share. They get together and read and play with scenes from Shakespeare for fun. All of these actors have starred on TV and films, some have their own series now, but they are not TV stars. They are actors, with a total love for the craft.
I am putting some links to reviews and articles on the film, Whedon, the way it was shot and the actors. I encourage you to read them and go online for more. To often actors feel they have no control over their careers, when the reality is they have complete control over their artistry and its expression. This group of friends got together for 12 intense day at Jess Whedon’s house and “put on a show” for their own enjoyment and recorded on film for all of us to enjoy. Read up up on this and see how real artists live and breathe their craft.
