Beginning Acting Technique Curriculum

Curriculum

The class size is limited to allow every actor in class a chance to get up on stage for exercises and scenes.
This is an Acting class not a watching class.
HANK_DIRECTING-300x200Week 1:  An Overview of Acting: the fundamental techniques necessary to master the craft of acting. We will learn these techniques in 3 blocks beginning with the Structure in week 2. The week 1 class runs an extra hour (10pm) to cover all the material.
Block 1 (2 weeks):  This first block is specifically designed to allow the new actors to learn how to structure scenes. The Structure: Core, Happiness, Driving Question, Actions and Tactics
Block 2 (2 weeks):Putting It All Together: How to bring the emotional truth to the scene through substitutions. As the actor’s grasp and learn to use the elements of the structure we will add in short monologues to develop the concepts used to bring emotional truth to the character and the scene.

See What/How We Teach

This video illustrates the structure applied to the scene found on pages 97 and 98 in the book ACTING LIONS.
The scene is performed twice:

  • Take one:  The actor Ryan Kessler, playing the Lawyer bases all of his choices (Driving Question, Actions and Tactics) on the core of Respect found on page 97.
  • Take two:  Ryan’s  choices are based on the core of Power found on page 98.
Watch how all of his choices affect the way the scene plays out and how the two different sets of choices affect the performance of the actor (Jim Lynch) playing the judge.
